The Scalpel or the Needle

I often giggle when people vehemently tell me they would NEVER try acupuncture.   Honestly, I think it developed as a defense mechanism because as I giggle externally, I sigh internally. This reaction tends to make people think i am laughing at their fear, but I get most people really do not know that the needles used in acupuncture are gentle. Acupuncture needles are not the hollow, serrated edge needles used to inject or withdraw fluids at a medical doctor’s office. But the thinking is slated to this type of needle because we are in the US. We are not in China where it is a part of the culture. So when I giggle, I’m not giggling at the fear.  I sigh because the same individuals that generally refuse so vehemently, I observe engaging in behavior that will lead them toward receiving services that require something far more intimidating than an acupuncture needle… a scalpel.

Sometimes the behavior is poor nutrition. Poor nutrition doesn’t immediately lead to a scalpel, but over time it can play a strong role in an individual needing surgical intervention(s). In my mind, people that would be that opposed to an acupuncture needle would avoid behavior the leads to the slicing open of dermis, fascia, and muscle. That fact is not funny, but sometimes I have to smile to keep from crying.

I remember once a man told me, “Well at least with a scalpel they’ll put me to sleep.” Wow! Clearly he was not aware of the side effects of anesthesia and all the potential complications of surgery. I must admit that I bellowed in laughter when his word reached my ears. I’m sure he thought it was because I found him comical.
In truth, all I could think about were the babies I’ve done acupuncture on. Here was this GROWN man over 6 ft tall and 300 lbs and all I could see were the 6 and 7 year old children that were fearless and didn’t flinch when I placed hair thin acupuncture needles in them. The situation however, did remind me of certain truths and facts.

Fact:    I have helped people avoid surgical scalpels and by doing so avoid its complications.
Truth:   I don’t have a chance helping someone avoid surgery that is crippled by fear.
Fact:     I can’t help everyone avoid surgery.
Truth:   The previous fact makes me sad.
